Cape Cod to launch SmartDart expansion and new electric transit vans in June

Cape Cod residents can look forward to enhanced transportation options as the Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) announced significant developments during its recent meeting on May 20, 2024. The MPO will launch the SmartDart expansion service across all towns on Cape Cod starting June 22, providing residents with improved access to public transit.

In addition to the SmartDart service, the MPO will introduce 20 new electric transit vans, funded through the Massachusetts Department of Transportation's (MassDOT) Mobility Assistance Program. This initiative aims to promote sustainable transportation solutions while meeting the growing demand for public transit in the region.

The meeting also highlighted upcoming public hearings regarding the Barnstable Park and Ride expansion. Two meetings are scheduled: one virtually on May 28 and another in person at the county complex on May 29. These sessions will allow community members to provide feedback on the proposed expansion, which has garnered significant interest from the public.

Furthermore, a design public hearing for the Harvard's Safe Routes to School project is set for June 12 at the Harvard's Community Center. This project aims to enhance safety for students traveling to school.

The MPO also discussed the ongoing Massachusetts travel survey, which seeks to gather data on the travel habits of Cape residents. This survey is crucial for understanding local transportation needs and will be conducted through a randomized mailer.
