Falmouth Town reviews top 10 safety projects for roads and bikeways

In a recent meeting held by the Cape Cod Commission, significant discussions focused on the Falmouth Complete Streets initiative, which aims to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the town. The meeting highlighted a series of proposed projects designed to improve traffic conditions and promote active transportation options.

One of the key projects discussed was the Catherine Lee Bates project, which includes the installation of a rapid rectangular flashing beacon at Route 28 to enhance visibility for pedestrians. This project is part of a broader effort to calm traffic speeds and provide better accommodations for cyclists along wide roadways.

The commission prioritized several other projects based on public support and safety concerns. Notably, improvements are planned for the intersection of Brickhill Road and Sandwich Road, which currently lacks pedestrian buttons and safety features for cyclists. Similarly, the intersection at Jones Road and Gifford is also set for enhancements to improve safety for all users.

Another significant initiative is the extension of the Shining Sea Bikeway into Bourne, which aims to connect existing bike paths and promote cycling as a viable transportation option. The proposed shared-use path along Gifford Street is expected to facilitate better access to downtown and the high school, further integrating cycling into the community's transportation network.

The meeting also addressed the need for improved crosswalks and safety measures near schools, with projects planned for T Ticket Elementary and North Falmouth Elementary, among others. These upgrades are crucial for ensuring safe walking routes for students and enhancing overall pedestrian safety in the area.

Additionally, the commission discussed the importance of addressing existing infrastructure issues, such as upgrading sidewalks and crosswalks in areas with high pedestrian traffic. The feedback from the public indicated a strong desire for safer routes to popular destinations, including beaches and community facilities.

As the meeting concluded, the commission acknowledged the need to consider state roadway projects, including those on Route 28 and Woods Hole Road, although these will not be eligible for the $400,000 funding currently available. The discussions underscored the commitment to fostering a safer and more accessible environment for all residents and visitors in Falmouth, with a clear focus on enhancing the town's transportation infrastructure.
