Amtrak collaborates with Kansas DOT to enhance Heartland Flyer service development

On February 7, 2024, the Kansas Department of Transportation (DOT) hosted a Passenger Rail Caucus meeting, focusing on the advancement of rail services in the state, particularly the Heartland Flyer Express extension. This initiative is part of the Federal Railroad Administration's (FRA) Corridor Identification and Development (ID) program, which aims to enhance passenger rail connectivity across the United States.

During the meeting, representatives from Amtrak expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Kansas DOT on a service development plan. They highlighted the progress made by Kansas DOT in moving this plan forward, even ahead of the FRA's program rollout. The Heartland Flyer was notably selected for inclusion in the FRA Corridor ID program, which encompasses 69 corridors nationwide, with a total funding allocation of approximately $34.5 million.

Amtrak officials emphasized the potential benefits of the Heartland Flyer extension, describing it as "low hanging fruit" that could yield significant returns on investment. However, they acknowledged that infrastructure improvements on the BNSF railway would be necessary to facilitate this expansion.

The meeting outlined the steps involved in the Corridor ID program, starting with the development of a service plan and progressing to preliminary engineering and environmental clearance. Kansas DOT has already made substantial strides in planning, which is expected to expedite the process. The completion of these initial steps is crucial for securing further funding for final design and construction.
