Cape Cod MPO outlines seven transportation goals for sustainability and safety

The Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is taking significant strides towards enhancing the region's transportation system, as discussed in their recent meeting on March 27, 2023. Central to the meeting was the unveiling of a draft vision statement that emphasizes a multimodal transportation system aimed at fostering environmental and economic vitality through strategic infrastructure investments.

The MPO's vision, shaped by public feedback, highlights key values such as safety, livability, sustainability, resiliency, equity, and the preservation of Cape Cod's unique character. Notably, the organization is considering adding an eighth goal focused on equity, reflecting the growing emphasis on inclusivity in transportation planning.

Among the seven established goals, the first is a commitment to improving safety across all transportation modes, with an ambitious target to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities. This goal aligns with the "Vision Zero" initiative and the recently awarded Safe Streets for All action plan grant, which aims to proactively address safety concerns before they escalate.

Environmental resilience is another priority, with plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance the natural environment. This includes initiatives for stormwater management and electrification of the transportation system, as well as ongoing studies on low-lying roads to combat climate change impacts.

The MPO is also focused on promoting livability and economic vitality by encouraging mixed-use developments that reduce reliance on single-occupancy vehicles. This goal aims to create vibrant communities where residents can live, work, and play without the need for extensive car travel.

Additionally, the organization is committed to improving accessibility through the Complete Streets principles, which aim to enhance infrastructure for healthy transportation options. This includes closing sidewalk gaps and increasing ADA accessibility, making it easier for residents to navigate their communities without cars.

As the MPO continues to refine its goals and strategies, the emphasis on safety, environmental sustainability, and community livability stands out as a roadmap for the future of transportation in Cape Cod. The next steps will involve further public engagement and the finalization of these objectives to ensure they meet the needs of the region effectively.
