Massachusetts traffic safety upgrades reduce crashes at five key intersections

Cape Cod's ongoing commitment to improving road safety was highlighted in a recent meeting of the Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization, where officials reviewed the impact of various traffic interventions across the region. Notably, several projects have led to significant reductions in crashes and injuries, showcasing the effectiveness of strategic upgrades.

One standout project discussed was the installation of a roundabout at the intersection of Route 6A, 28, and Canal Road in Orleans. Originally unsignalized, this intersection saw a dramatic decrease in crashes from 33 to 13 following the roundabout's completion in 2015. Injury crashes also fell from 10 to 5, demonstrating the roundabout's role in enhancing safety by slowing traffic and reducing the likelihood of severe accidents.

Another key improvement was made at the Route 28 and Lumbert Mill Road intersection in Barnstable, where a new traffic signal and left turn lanes were added. This upgrade, completed in 2011, resulted in a reduction of crashes from 37 to 27 over a four-year period, with serious injury crashes also declining. Although rear-end collisions increased—a common trend with new traffic signals—the overall safety at the intersection improved, now falling below average crash rates compared to similar locations.

In Falmouth, the Route 28 Jones Road intersection underwent upgrades to enhance multimodal accommodations, including pedestrian push buttons and new turn lanes. Despite a slight increase in total crashes from 31 to 38, the number of injury crashes decreased, indicating that the improvements were beneficial for pedestrian safety.

The meeting also highlighted the successful installation of a roundabout at Kittuit Road and South Sandwich Road, which saw crashes drop from 27 to just 6 after the intervention. This project exemplified the effectiveness of roundabouts in reducing both total and injury crashes, with no injury incidents reported post-construction.

Lastly, the transformation of the old Exit 2 at Route 130 and Route 6 into a signalized intersection with geometric upgrades has improved safety by encouraging slower speeds and better sightlines for drivers.

These discussions underscore the Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization's proactive approach to traffic safety, with ongoing evaluations planned to ensure that these interventions continue to meet community needs. As officials look to the future, they encourage public input on potential improvements, reinforcing their commitment to making Cape Cod roads safer for all users.
