Cape Cod RTA unveils electric vehicle consultant RFP to enhance regional infrastructure

The Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) convened on October 17, 2022, to discuss various transportation initiatives and updates affecting the region. The meeting began with a review of the Roan Rotary Improvement Project, where members sought clarification on the timeline for the project, currently at 25% design. It was noted that a public hearing would be scheduled soon to provide more detailed information, with an anticipated advertisement date in June 2023.

Judith raised concerns from constituents regarding the impact of the rotary and bridge construction, emphasizing the importance of communicating crash statistics to the public to highlight the necessity of the project. The MPO acknowledged the need for transparency and agreed to share relevant data.

Following this, the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) provided updates on the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) amendment, which had been in development for several months. The RTA expressed gratitude for the support received, particularly in securing stimulus funding during the pandemic. They highlighted the completion of a five-year capital plan and a ten-year strategic plan aimed at enhancing the transportation system in Cape Cod.

A significant focus of the RTA's efforts is the transition from fossil fuel vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs). The RTA is in the process of hiring a consultant to develop an EV infrastructure plan, which will involve collaboration with various stakeholders, including local schools interested in training programs for EV maintenance. This initiative aims to prepare the region for upcoming legislative requirements regarding electric vehicle adoption.

Steve provided additional updates, including information on the Safe Routes to School program and the upcoming MassDOT Moving Together Conference, where safety initiatives will be presented. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to secure federal funding for infrastructure improvements, particularly for fish passage enhancements.

Lastly, the MPO reported on the successful allocation of over $60,000 for bike racks and repair stations across the region, benefiting multiple towns and contributing to the promotion of cycling as a sustainable transportation option.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to keep the community informed about ongoing projects and funding opportunities, ensuring that Cape Cod's transportation infrastructure continues to evolve and meet the needs of its residents.
