Barnstable Town Leaders Discuss Comprehensive Bike Path Improvements and Safety Measures

During the recent Cape Cod Commission-Barnstable Complete Streets Meeting, a significant focus emerged on enhancing bike safety and connectivity in Barnstable. Community members voiced strong concerns about the safety of existing bike routes, particularly along busy corridors like Route 132, which many believe are unsuitable for cyclists.

Betty, a participant in the meeting, highlighted the need for safer bike lanes, emphasizing that current projects should prioritize protected routes away from heavy traffic. She expressed dismay over the Route 132 project, questioning its suitability for cyclists given the area's development aimed at affluent shoppers. "I can't imagine anybody in their right mind riding a bike on Route 132," she stated, urging planners to consider alternative routes that provide safer access for cyclists and pedestrians.

Gordon, another attendee, echoed this sentiment, advocating for a comprehensive plan to connect bike paths throughout the town rather than piecemeal projects. He suggested that a more strategic approach would enhance connectivity between villages and prioritize safer bike lanes, similar to successful projects like C Street.

The meeting also addressed the town's plans to apply for funding through the MassDOT program, which could provide up to $500,000 for selected projects. This funding opportunity, available in October, could help Barnstable implement some of the proposed improvements.
