Barnstable prioritizes shared use path and sidewalk projects for federal funding

Barnstable is set to enhance its transportation infrastructure with the introduction of a proposed shared-use path on Bierce's Way, which will receive federal funding. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve pedestrian and cyclist access throughout the town, as highlighted during the Cape Cod Commission-Barnstable Complete Streets Meeting held on February 15, 2023.

The meeting showcased several ongoing projects, including the Ocean Street sidewalk project, which recently held a public hearing through the Department of Public Works. The Cape Cod Rail Trail is also expected to extend into Barnstable, further promoting safe and accessible travel options for residents and visitors alike.

A draft prioritization plan was presented, outlining various projects and their respective elements. This plan serves as a crucial tool for the town to identify and seek funding for necessary improvements. Notably, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) construction grant program allows flexibility in project execution, meaning that the highest-ranked projects do not necessarily need to be completed first.

The meeting also introduced a new web tool that provides valuable insights into existing conditions across Barnstable. This tool allows residents to explore village-specific data, including the locations of sidewalks, traffic volumes, and areas with higher crash rates involving pedestrians and cyclists. The tool aims to identify gaps in the current infrastructure and prioritize safety improvements.

Public engagement has been a significant aspect of this initiative, with over 500 comments collected last summer regarding transportation needs and safety concerns. The feedback has been categorized by mode of transport, helping to inform future planning and project prioritization.
