Barnstable prioritizes 52 community projects in new interactive map release

The Cape Cod Commission's recent meeting on February 15, 2023, unveiled a significant step forward in the town's Complete Streets initiative, with the introduction of a draft prioritization plan that identifies 52 key projects aimed at enhancing pedestrian and cyclist safety across Barnstable.

During the meeting, officials presented an interactive map that highlights areas of concern and proposed improvements, including new sidewalks and shared-use paths. The map allows residents to zoom in on specific projects, such as a proposed shared-use path on Race Lane in Marsons Mills, which emerged from community feedback. This initiative is part of a broader effort to transform the town's infrastructure to better accommodate non-motorized transportation.

The prioritization plan is a result of extensive public input, with over 500 comments reviewed to determine the most pressing needs. The projects selected not only focus on enhancing connectivity but also prioritize safety, reflecting the community's desire for safer streets. Notably, the plan includes projects on state-owned roadways, although funding for these will not come from the MassDOT Complete Streets program.

Residents are encouraged to engage with the interactive map and provide feedback during the open public comment period, which will last for the next month. This initiative marks a crucial first step in the town's commitment to improving its streets for all users, paving the way for future developments in the Complete Streets program.
