Committee Launches Vision Zero Action Plan to Enhance Traffic Safety in 15 Towns

The Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is taking significant steps towards enhancing road safety with the launch of a new initiative aimed at developing a Vision Zero action plan. During a recent meeting held on March 25, 2024, MPO representatives announced plans to release a request for proposals to hire a consultant, with the goal of kicking off the project this summer. The draft of the action plan is expected to be completed by early winter 2025, with a final version ready by spring 2025, coinciding with the availability of Safe Streets for All implementation grants.

The Vision Zero initiative aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries on roads by focusing on safety and equity. To ensure comprehensive input, the MPO is forming a Vision Zero advisory committee, which will consist of diverse stakeholders, including local elected officials, public safety representatives, and community members with expertise in multimodal transportation, disability, and equity issues. The committee will hold approximately five virtual meetings to review the commitment statement and provide feedback on the action plan's development.

MPO members expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the importance of community involvement and the potential for collaboration with existing bike and pedestrian committees in the region. The committee is expected to have a maximum of 11 members, and there may be opportunities for compensation for community participants from unique organizations.

As the MPO moves forward with this initiative, it aims to create a safer transportation environment for all residents across the 15 towns in the region. The upcoming months will be crucial as the MPO seeks feedback and finalizes the advisory committee, paving the way for a proactive approach to road safety in Cape Cod.
