Cape Cod towns review TIP projects as Eastham seeks new opportunities

The Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization convened on February 26, 2024, to discuss the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and various regional projects. The meeting focused on the allocation of TIP funds and the status of transportation projects across the region.

The first item on the agenda highlighted a ten-year review of TIP expenditures by town. It was noted that most towns have either ongoing projects or have completed projects within the last decade. However, Eastham was identified as the only town without a TIP project in over ten years. Efforts are underway to assist Eastham in identifying potential future projects, including the East Sam Orleans Rotary Project, which is currently being designed by MassDOT.

The discussion then shifted to community outreach efforts related to TIP development. Feedback from public meetings indicated strong support for bike path projects, particularly the completion of Vision 88, which aims to connect Falmouth to Provincetown. Additional support was expressed for the Mashpee Rotary Improvement Project, a sidewalk project on Route 6A in Barnstable, and the Barnstable Park and Ride.

The meeting concluded with a review of eligible projects for programming within the TIP. While funding remains limited for the 2029 timeframe, several priority projects led by towns were highlighted. MassDOT's involvement in advancing these projects was acknowledged. Additionally, the Cape Cod Commission will continue to offer opportunities for towns to apply for funding for bike infrastructure, such as bike racks, should any TIP funds remain available.

Overall, the meeting provided a comprehensive overview of the current status of transportation projects in Cape Cod, emphasizing the importance of community input and collaboration among towns to enhance regional transportation infrastructure.
