Cape Cod secures $240K grant for Safe Streets Action Plan development

Cape Cod is set to enhance road safety following the successful application for a $240,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration under the Safe Streets for All Safety Action Plan. This initiative, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aims to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on roadways through a comprehensive Vision Zero action plan.

During the Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting on March 25, 2024, Colleen provided an update on the grant, which is part of a larger USDOT program offering $5 to $6 billion over five years. The Cape Cod MPO, along with other regional planning organizations, successfully applied for the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan grant, which will guide the development of strategies and policies to improve road safety.

The action plan will involve extensive safety analysis, public outreach, and equity considerations, with a focus on proactive measures to protect vulnerable road users. Recommendations may include infrastructure improvements such as roundabouts, enhanced lighting, crosswalks, and bicycle lanes, which can significantly impact community safety.

Additionally, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has committed $60,000 to support the development of this plan, ensuring that all 15 towns in Barnstable County will be eligible for future implementation grants based on the identified projects.

This initiative marks a significant step towards creating safer roads in Cape Cod, with the MPO committed to ongoing communication and updates as the action plan progresses. The community can look forward to a safer transportation environment as these plans are put into action.
