MPO votes to adopt statewide safety targets aiming for zero roadway fatalities

The Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) convened on December 18, 2023, to discuss critical safety measures aimed at reducing traffic fatalities and injuries across the region. A key focus of the meeting was the adoption of new safety performance targets as part of the state's Vision Zero initiative, which aims for zero fatalities and serious injuries on roadways.

During the meeting, officials highlighted the concerning trend of increased traffic fatalities during the COVID-19 pandemic, attributed to fewer vehicles on the road but higher speeds. The MPO is now setting realistic targets to reverse this trend and return to pre-pandemic safety levels. The data presented showed a rise in fatalities in Cape Cod, with 12, 19, and 15 deaths recorded in 2020, 2021, and 2022, respectively, following a low of seven in 2019.

The discussion included a review of serious injuries and non-motorist fatalities, which also reflected similar upward trends during the pandemic years. However, there was a noted improvement in non-motorist fatalities, dropping from seven in 2021 to two in 2022. The MPO aims to continue this positive trajectory by implementing targeted safety measures.

In response to questions from committee members, it was acknowledged that while summer months typically see higher traffic volumes, serious crashes can occur year-round due to various factors, including increased speeds and reduced visibility in the off-season. The committee emphasized the importance of understanding these dynamics to effectively address safety concerns.

The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote to adopt the proposed safety targets for the upcoming year, reinforcing the commitment to improving road safety for all residents and visitors in the Cape Cod region. The MPO's proactive approach, including the Safe Streets for All grant, aims to further enhance safety measures and reduce the number of traffic-related incidents in the community.
