Lafayette approves Law Jam event and tax abatement for Hansen Companies

The St. Joseph City Council made significant strides in community engagement and economic development during their meeting on May 6, 2024. The council approved a special event permit for the Lafayette's "Law Jam," scheduled for August 23, which will feature live music until 11 PM and require the closure of a nearby alley. This decision came after a public hearing where no objections were raised from local residents, indicating strong community support for the event.

In addition to the special event, the council also addressed a tax abatement request from Hansen Companies, which plans to construct an 82,500 square foot manufacturing facility in the city's industrial park. The project is expected to retain 61 jobs and create approximately a dozen new positions over the coming years. The tax abatement, which could last up to nine years and total $396,438, was unanimously recommended for approval by the Economic Development Authority (EDA) due to its potential for job creation and economic growth.

The council conducted a public hearing on the tax abatement, during which no public comments were made. Following the hearing, the council voted to approve the resolution for the tax abatement, reinforcing their commitment to fostering local business development.
