Uvalde County approves Texas Parks boating access grant for Cooksey Park enhancements

The Uvalde County Commissioners Court convened on December 9, 2024, to discuss significant developments, including a resolution to support a grant application from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the awarding of a contract for the Kanipa waterline improvement project.

The meeting opened with a proposal to apply for a boating access grant, which could provide up to $250,000 to enhance Cooksey Park on the Nueces River. Carl Esher, who presented the proposal, explained that the grant would cover 75% of the costs associated with designing improvements such as boat ramps, restrooms, sidewalks, and fish cleaning stations. The application must be submitted by February 2025, and if successful, the project would be "shovel ready" for future funding opportunities. The court unanimously adopted the resolution to proceed with the grant application.

In a separate agenda item, the court reviewed bids for the Kanipa waterline improvement project. Uvalde County received a single bid from Albany Stock Contractors LLC, amounting to $518,918.10. This bid falls within the budget of $549,531 allocated for the project, leaving a surplus for potential additional work. Esher recommended awarding the contract to Albany Stock Contractors, noting their satisfactory previous work in the area. The court agreed to proceed with this recommendation.
