Lehi Council approves safety improvements for stairwell garage following constituent's advocacy

Northampton City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing public safety by approving a funding request aimed at improving safety measures at the city’s parking garage. During the December 5, 2024, meeting, council members discussed the urgent need for safety upgrades, particularly in light of a tragic incident that occurred in 2009, when a constituent's son fell from the garage.

Councilor Elkins emphasized the overdue nature of these improvements, advocating for changes that have been sought for over 15 years. The proposed upgrades include the installation of guardrails over stairwells, painting of the stairwells, and repairs to the garage roofs, which have recently developed leaks due to damage.

Director McCarthy expressed optimism that bundling these projects could lead to cost savings, despite recent bids coming in significantly higher than expected. He noted that the current labor market has driven up prices for construction work, making it challenging to secure reasonable bids. The council is hopeful that by combining these projects, they can attract more competitive offers.

Mayor Sharon praised Director McCarthy for his persistence in addressing these safety concerns, acknowledging the importance of the upgrades for the community. Councilor LaVarge also voiced support for the funding, highlighting the safety issues that have arisen in the garage and the necessity of immediate action.
