Ice Age Trail begins construction on new Washington Street trailhead in May

West Bend City is set to enhance outdoor recreation with the upcoming construction of a new trailhead for the Ice Age Trail, located on the south side of Washington Street. This development will provide direct access to the Ridge Run section of the trail, eliminating the need for hikers to reroute several thousand feet east on University Avenue to enter the park.

The project includes a 50-foot wide bridge over West Swamp Creek, along with a 50-foot long boardwalk, facilitating easier access to the existing Ridge Run area. The Ice Age Trail Alliance has already secured a contractor for the installation, which is scheduled to begin in May, following the completion of the necessary permitting process. Notably, the entire project is funded through the Ice Age Trail Alliance.

While the trailhead will improve access to the trail, it is important to note that parking facilities are not included in this phase of the project. Conceptual drawings for parking have been developed, but funding for that aspect has not yet been secured.

In addition to the trailhead discussion, the meeting also touched on community initiatives, including a neighborhood group’s efforts to purchase a game for Villa Park Ninth Square, supported by grant funding. These developments reflect West Bend's commitment to enhancing recreational opportunities and community engagement. As the city moves forward with these projects, residents can look forward to improved access to nature and community spaces.
