Knox County finalizes opioid recovery housing agreement for individuals in transition

The Knott County Fiscal Court convened on May 20, 2024, to discuss significant initiatives aimed at addressing the opioid crisis and property buyout programs. A key focus of the meeting was a resolution to partner with Beacons of Hope to provide transitional housing for individuals recovering from opioid use disorder and related mental health issues.

The court discussed the limited use of opioid funding, which has been allocated from lawsuits against major opioid companies. The funding, amounting to approximately $454,000, has yet to be spent since its inception about a year and a half ago. The proposed agreement with Beacons of Hope aims to subsidize rent for individuals transitioning out of drug court or completing Casey's Law, which assists those with substance use disorders. The court emphasized the importance of transitional housing as a critical support for individuals re-entering society, noting that many lack stable housing upon completing treatment programs.

In addition to the housing initiative, the court reviewed the NRCS property buyout program, which involves closing on five properties with payments totaling over $400,000. The process is expected to expedite financial relief to affected families, with plans to continue the buyout program bi-weekly.

The meeting concluded with a motion to approve the transitional housing agreement, reflecting the court's commitment to addressing the challenges posed by substance use disorders in the community.
