County Council approves ATV use on designated roads ahead of state mandate

The Martin County Fiscal Court held a regular meeting on April 18, 2024, where key discussions focused on the first reading of a new ordinance regarding the operation of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) on designated county roads.

The proposed ordinance aims to legalize ATV use on specific county roads, which were outlined in an addendum during the meeting. Officials noted that this initiative is proactive, as the state is expected to mandate similar regulations for county roads in the coming year. The ordinance includes a list of main roads where ATV operation will be permitted, ensuring compliance with upcoming state requirements.

During the discussion, it was clarified that the ordinance does not encompass all county roads but focuses on those identified as suitable for ATV use. Some roads mentioned, such as Rockhouse Road, are partially state roads, which contributed to the complexity of the mileage designations included in the ordinance.

In addition to the ATV ordinance, the meeting briefly addressed the health department's acquisition of two 2013 Ford Escape SUVs, which were described as being in good condition.
