Developer proposes 138 housing units and retail space for Needles community

A significant housing development proposal took center stage at the Needles City Council meeting on February 14, 2023, as city leaders discussed plans to address the pressing housing shortage in the area. The project, initially approved in April 2019, faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to increased construction costs and supply chain issues.

The revised proposal aims to transform the original plan of 74 housing units into a more feasible 138 units, while still incorporating 23,000 square feet of retail space and 24,000 square feet of common open space. This adjustment comes in response to community feedback highlighting critical challenges such as substandard housing quality, limited home purchasing options, and the need for accessible grocery stores.

The developer emphasized the project's potential to not only meet the growing demand for housing—predicted to increase by over a thousand residents by 2035—but also to retain local workers who have been relocating to nearby Arizona due to a lack of affordable housing. The proposal includes a mix of bedroom types to cater to various family sizes, aiming to create a vibrant community hub that supports local businesses and amenities.

City officials are encouraged by the project's promise to enhance the quality of life in Needles and meet the housing element study's requirement for 87 new units over the next nine years. The council's decision on granting an extension for the project is anticipated to play a crucial role in shaping the future of housing in Needles.
