Farnell to build 40 miles of fiber network in Needles area

A groundbreaking announcement was made during the Needles City Council meeting on March 28, 2023, as officials revealed plans for a new fiber-optic network set to transform internet access in the area. The project, spearheaded by a partnership between the former Mohave Indian Tribe and Dobson Telephone, aims to deliver high-speed internet to approximately 2,100 homes and businesses across 7.5 square miles.

The initiative, which received a 50% loan and 50% grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will install around 40 miles of fiber-optic cable, providing residents with symmetrical internet speeds of up to 10 gigabits. This upgrade is touted as a significant step towards future-proofing the community's connectivity, ensuring reliable and unlimited data access.

"This is really a nice opportunity to bring the area together for business and everyday life," said a representative during the meeting. The network will not only support voice and data services but also offer an app-based video service, similar to popular streaming platforms, enhancing entertainment options for users.
