Zion Farmers Market relocates to Thursdays to boost participation

The Lock Haven City Council has approved a significant change to the schedule of the local farmers market, moving it from Saturdays to Thursdays. This decision, made during the council's regular meeting on March 8, 2022, aims to enhance participation from local farmers and provide better access to fresh produce for the community.

The request to shift the market to Thursdays was brought forward by a group of four farmers, two of whom have previously participated in the market, while the other two are new to the area. They expressed concerns that Saturday's market conflicted with their participation in other markets, particularly the Bellefonte Market, which operates on the same day. The new schedule will run from May 19 to October 27, 2022, from 3 PM to 7 PM at the East Main Street parking lot. This change is expected to allow farmers to offer a wider variety of produce, especially in the fall when harvests are plentiful.

Council members discussed the implications of this change, noting that Thursdays are traditionally slower business days. They emphasized the potential for increased foot traffic in downtown Lock Haven, which could benefit local businesses. Some council members highlighted that extending the market hours could encourage local merchants to stay open later, thus maximizing the opportunity for sales.

In addition to the farmers market, the council also discussed plans for street closures during the last Friday and Saturday of each month, which will include events aimed at promoting local businesses, particularly those not located on Main Street. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to revitalize the downtown area and support local commerce.
