City officials assess $14M damage from Sulfur Fire with Cal OES support

The City of Clearlake is grappling with significant recovery challenges following recent devastating fires, with city officials estimating damages and cleanup costs to exceed $14 million. During the City Council meeting on September 2, 2021, city representatives discussed ongoing efforts to secure state assistance and address immediate needs for affected residents.

Compounding the issue, the Creek Side Mobile Home Park has also encountered water supply problems, with the local water district indicating no plans to repair the damaged line. "We’re trying to coordinate some stuff and figure out what our options are there," officials noted, highlighting the complexity of the situation.

In addition to water supply issues, the city is also focused on hazardous waste cleanup, with a state team having recently completed the removal of dangerous materials from affected areas. However, one structure remains unsafe for entry, delaying further cleanup efforts.

As the city prepares for potential rain, officials are also concerned about the risk of debris and pollution entering local waterways. They are working with the California Conservation Corps to implement mitigation measures, but the estimated cost for adequate protective measures could reach $3 million—funds that the city currently lacks.

The council is actively seeking additional resources and support from state representatives to address these pressing challenges. "We’re going to bring the situation up to Senator Maguire and Assemblymember Aguilar Curry," city officials confirmed, underscoring their commitment to securing necessary aid for recovery.
