Clear Lake City Council declares October 2022 Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer Awareness Months

The Clearlake City Council meeting on October 6, 2022, focused on two significant proclamations: declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The council emphasized the impact of domestic violence on individuals across various backgrounds, highlighting that in the past year, Lake County law enforcement responded to over 253 incidents of domestic violence. The victim witness division of the district attorney's office assisted 336 victims, while the Lake Family Resource Center received 942 crisis line calls and provided shelter for 116 victims and their children, totaling 4,292 bed nights. The proclamation urged community involvement in supporting victims and preventing domestic violence, recognizing the collaborative efforts of local organizations dedicated to this cause.

During the meeting, a representative from the Lake Family Resource Center expressed gratitude for the proclamation and announced a community walk on October 22 to raise awareness about domestic violence. Participants were encouraged to wear purple and join the event to promote the message that "love shouldn't hurt."

Additionally, the council proclaimed October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, acknowledging the ongoing fight against breast cancer, which remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States. The proclamation aimed to raise awareness about the disease, encourage regular screenings, and honor survivors and those affected by breast cancer.
