Temple University President honors Sergeant Fitzgerald and students during community address

In a heartfelt tribute during the Temple University Board of Trustees meeting on February 19, President Jason Wingard honored the memory of Sergeant Christopher Fitzgerald, who was tragically murdered two years ago, and acknowledged the recent loss of three Temple students: Chase Miles, Tyler Sabapathy, and Larissa Vasconcelos. Wingard called for a moment of silence to remember these individuals, emphasizing the impact of their sacrifices on the Temple community.

Wingard, who has been in office for nearly four months, shared updates on significant developments at the university, including the opening of a new satellite location for Temple University Japan in Kyoto, which aims to enhance study abroad opportunities and foster growth in international enrollment. He also addressed the challenges posed by recent federal directives, assuring the community that Temple's commitment to diversity and inclusion remains steadfast.

A key focus of the meeting was campus and neighborhood safety. Wingard announced an independent staffing study for the Department of Public Safety to ensure adequate resources for maintaining a secure environment. He highlighted a recent donation of $100,000 from United Concordia Dental to support a Children's Dental Clinic, showcasing the university's commitment to community health.

Despite a decline in overall enrollment, Wingard expressed optimism about future classes, particularly the incoming class of 2029. He introduced a new student services center aimed at simplifying processes for students and enhancing their success.

In terms of academic excellence, Temple received the highest research activity designation from the Carnegie Foundation, reaffirming its status as a leading institution. Wingard also announced plans to refresh the university's strategic plan, incorporating feedback from various stakeholders.

As Temple approaches its 150th anniversary, Wingard emphasized the importance of philanthropy and community engagement, expressing enthusiasm for upcoming fundraising initiatives that will support the university's mission and growth.
