Commissioner Coker addresses water use reductions in cannabis processing plans

The Clearlake Planning Commission convened on May 10, 2022, to address several key topics, including water usage concerns related to a cannabis processing facility. The meeting began with discussions on staffing levels, where it was noted that the facility would employ three individuals, including a manager, with an additional six employees anticipated for phase two of operations.

A significant portion of the meeting focused on water usage projections, prompted by concerns raised by Commissioner Coker. The facility's canopy size was reduced to 10,000 square feet, which led to a decrease in estimated water consumption from 455,000 gallons to approximately 260,000 gallons. The water usage calculations were based on a conservative estimate of 26 gallons per square foot, although the facility operator suggested that a more accurate figure might be closer to 20 gallons per square foot.

The operator clarified that the primary use of water within the processing facility would be for restroom breaks and handwashing, as water is not used for cleaning equipment due to the nature of cannabis oils. This led to a consensus that the revised water usage projections were reasonable, with a reduction of nearly half from initial estimates.
