Clear Lake Council declares May 18-24 as Safe Boating Week

The Clearlake City Council has officially declared May 18 through May 24, 2024, as National Safe Boating Week, emphasizing the importance of safety on the water for recreational boaters. This proclamation aims to raise awareness about life-saving practices that can enhance the boating experience and reduce fatalities.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, recreational boating fatalities decreased in 2022, with 659 reported deaths. Alarmingly, 445 of these fatalities were due to drowning, and many of these lives could have been saved if the individuals had been wearing life jackets. The council's resolution highlights the ongoing efforts of the Lake County flotilla, which provides free life jackets to children and engages in community activities to promote safe boating practices.

The flotilla plans to continue its educational initiatives, including safety patrols and free vessel safety checks, to encourage responsible boating habits. The council urges all boaters in Clearlake, Lake Pillsbury, Blue Lakes, and Indian Valley Reservoir to prioritize safety by wearing life jackets and adhering to safe boating practices.
