Clear Lake City Council approves five-year contract with Axon for body cameras

During the Clearlake City Council meeting on November 3, 2022, the council discussed a significant proposal to renew a five-year agreement with Axon Enterprises for body-worn cameras and digital evidence management. This decision comes as the current contract, which costs $19,000 annually, is set to expire at the end of the year.

Acting Lieutenant Peterson presented the details of the new contract, which would increase the first-year cost to $37,031.70, followed by annual costs of $33,837.86, totaling approximately $172,383.14 over five years. This represents a substantial increase of 78.09% for the first year and an overall increase of 81.45% compared to the previous contract. However, the new agreement includes unlimited cloud storage and access to Axon's advanced features, such as GPS tracking for officer safety and performance metrics for better oversight of police activities.

The GPS functionality is particularly noteworthy, as it allows dispatchers to track officers' locations in real-time, enhancing safety during potentially dangerous situations. This capability could prove invaluable during large-scale events or emergencies, ensuring that officers can be coordinated effectively. The integration of body cameras with other devices, such as tasers and in-car cameras, will also streamline operations and improve accountability.
