Lake Family Resource Center raises assault awareness with teal ribbons and community events

During the City Council Meeting on April 7, 2022, community members highlighted the urgent issue of sexual assault awareness in Lake County. A representative from the Lake Family Resource Center addressed the council, emphasizing the alarming statistic that approximately three sexual assaults occur each week in the county. She noted that 63 percent of these incidents go unreported, underscoring the need for support and resources for survivors.

To raise awareness, the center distributed teal ribbon pins, the color symbolizing sexual assault awareness, and displayed 201 teal flags outside their Kelseyville office, representing the survivors from 2021. The representative also announced Denim Day, scheduled for April 27, encouraging residents to wear denim in solidarity with survivors. This initiative stems from a historical event in 1999 when an Italian Supreme Court ruling suggested that a survivor's jeans contributed to the assault, sparking a global movement for awareness.

The Lake Family Resource Center offers a range of free and confidential services, including support during police interviews, forensic exams, counseling, and temporary shelter, available regardless of when the assault occurred. They also operate a 24-hour community crisis line for those in need.

The meeting transitioned to public comments, allowing residents to voice their concerns on various topics. This segment is crucial for community engagement, as it provides a platform for citizens to address the council on issues affecting their lives.
