Mayor Slope designates February 2022 as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

In a heartfelt moment during the City of Clearlake City Council meeting on February 17, 2022, officials proclaimed February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. This declaration aims to shed light on a pressing issue that affects many adolescents in the community.

The proclamation highlighted alarming statistics, revealing that approximately one in three teens experience some form of dating violence, whether verbal, physical, or emotional. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by today’s youth, the council emphasized the importance of addressing the realities of modern relationships, which are often complicated by digital interactions through social media and online platforms. These tools, while integral to teen life, can also expose young people to potential predators, often without the knowledge of their caregivers.

Sherry Young, the Victim Services Program Director at Lake Family Resource Center, accepted the proclamation via Zoom. She expressed gratitude for the council's commitment to raising awareness about dating violence, which is often underestimated in its prevalence among teens and young adults. Young underscored the national theme for this year’s awareness month: “Talk About It.” This initiative encourages open conversations about healthy and unhealthy relationships, aiming to educate both youth and adults on recognizing and preventing dating abuse.

The council's proclamation serves as a call to action for the entire community, urging residents to engage in discussions that can foster understanding and support for those affected by dating violence. By designating February as a month of awareness, Clearlake aims to create a safer environment for its youth, promoting healthy relationships and empowering individuals to speak out against violence.
