Lake County officials discuss emergency alert systems including Zone Haven and Nixle

Emergency alert systems took center stage at the Clearlake City Council meeting on August 18, 2022, as officials discussed the critical role of Zone Haven and other alerting services in keeping the community safe during emergencies. Lauren Berlin, the Public Information and Community Engagement Officer for the Lake County Sheriff's Office, led the discussion, outlining the multi-layered alerting services available to residents. These include Zone Haven, Lake Co Alerts (Nixle and Everbridge), and IPAWS. The goal is to streamline notifications to avoid overwhelming the public with multiple alerts during emergencies.

Sheriff Martin, who joined via Zoom, highlighted the unpredictable nature of emergencies, particularly wildfires, which can change rapidly. He noted that while there is no rigid set of criteria for issuing alerts, the focus is on real-time information and community safety. Door-to-door notifications are prioritized when there is an immediate threat to life.

Berlin reiterated the importance of sending alerts only for severe incidents to ensure that the community pays attention to critical information. The presentation underscored the collaborative efforts between local agencies to enhance public safety and improve emergency response.
