Township board rejects Langhorne Gables drainage bids due to high costs

The Middletown Board of Supervisors convened on August 16, 2022, to discuss several key issues, primarily focusing on the Langhorne Gables Phase 2 drainage project. The board reviewed the results of the recent bidding process, which yielded two bids that significantly exceeded the allocated budget for the project.

The budget for the Langhorne Gables drainage improvement was set at $675,000, but the lowest bid received was $1,023,720. This discrepancy was attributed to rising costs of materials, particularly pipes, and ongoing supply chain issues. In light of these factors, the board recommended rebidding the project in January 2023, hoping to secure better pricing as contractors may have more availability at the start of the year.

During the meeting, board members expressed concern for residents facing flooding issues in their backyards, especially with the impending rainy season. They discussed potential interim measures to assist affected residents, including working with the public works department to ensure drainage inlets are clear and streets are maintained.

A motion was made to reject all bids received on August 5, 2022, due to insufficient funds and to plan for a rebid in the 2023 budget year. The motion passed unanimously, with all board members voting in favor.

Additionally, a resident suggested considering eco-friendly landscaping options in future drainage projects to improve water management. The board acknowledged this input and agreed to reach out to residents who have been in contact with the township regarding their flooding concerns.
