Clear Lake City Council declares April 2024 Child Abuse Prevention Month with community events

April 2024 has been officially declared Child Abuse Prevention Month in Clearlake, as the City Council emphasizes the urgent need for community awareness and action against child abuse. The proclamation highlights alarming statistics, revealing that Wake County Child Welfare Services received around 1,500 reports of abuse or neglect in the past year, with 72 children currently placed outside their homes due to these issues.

Kiersten Martinez, a social worker with Lake County Child Welfare, addressed the council, stressing the importance of community partnerships in safeguarding children. "Child welfare social workers engage families in making positive change," she stated, underscoring the collaborative efforts needed to protect vulnerable children.

JB White, the April event coordinator, shared details about various initiatives planned for the month, including the Pinwheel Garden Challenge and a children's festival on April 27 at Austin Park. These events aim to foster community involvement and raise awareness about child abuse prevention. White encouraged residents to participate, saying, "Child abuse and neglect is preventable, and it takes a community effort."

Additionally, the council announced the upcoming LISA Project exhibit, which offers a multisensory experience to help attendees understand the realities of child abuse. This event, along with a comprehensive prevention plan presentation scheduled for May 23, aims to engage the community in meaningful discussions and actions to combat child abuse.
