Clear Lake Vet Clinic provides essential surgeries and free services for local pets

During the City Council Regular Meeting on February 15, 2024, the Clearlake Animal Shelter highlighted its ongoing efforts to improve animal welfare in the community. Director Scott reported significant achievements, including 33 spay and neuter surgeries and various other procedures, totaling over $55,000 in veterinary services provided by the local Clear Lake Vet Clinic.

In an exciting development for 2024, the shelter has initiated free spay and neuter services, microchipping, and vaccinations, aiming to host these clinics twice a month. The response has been encouraging, with 50 residents participating in the first three events. This initiative not only addresses the immediate health needs of pets but also fosters community engagement, as volunteers have stepped up to assist during these clinics.

Councilmember Sooten inquired about the shelter's no-kill status and the presence of other no-kill facilities in Lake County, to which Director Scott confirmed that there are currently no other no-kill shelters in the area. Councilmember Prodock raised concerns about the increasing number of stray cats, prompting a discussion on the shelter's capacity to handle these animals. The shelter is adapting its facilities to accommodate more cats, particularly those that can be trapped, neutered, and released back into their environments.
