Clear Lake showcases adoptable dog Waldo and North Bay Animal Services annual report

During the City Council Regular Meeting on February 15, 2024, the Clearlake community was introduced to Waldo, the adoptable dog of the month, highlighting the city's ongoing commitment to animal welfare. Waldo, a friendly five-year-old pit bull mix, is fully vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped, making him an ideal companion for both outdoor adventures and cozy nights in. Residents are encouraged to visit the shelter at 6820 Old Highway 53, open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM, to meet Waldo and consider adoption.

In addition to the spotlight on Waldo, the meeting featured a presentation from North Bay Animal Services, which provided an annual report on its operations in Clearlake. The Chief of Animal Services shared insights from their first year and a half of managing animal control in the area. The report emphasized the challenges faced, including the need for repairs to some kennels and facilities, but also highlighted significant progress in community engagement and the shelter's commitment to a no-kill philosophy.

The shelter has achieved an impressive 98% live release rate, far exceeding the 90% benchmark set by the no-kill movement. This success is particularly notable given the ongoing veterinary shortages and the influx of animals adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chief expressed optimism about the shelter's future, stating that the community has embraced this new philosophy, which aligns with their desire for a humane and compassionate approach to animal care.
