Clear Lake City Council proclaims August 31 as International Overdose Awareness Day

The Clearlake City Council took a significant step in addressing the ongoing overdose crisis by proclaiming August 31, 2023, as International Overdose Awareness Day. This proclamation highlights the urgent need for community awareness and action against the rising rates of overdose deaths, particularly in Lake County, which has the highest fatal overdose rate in California.

During the meeting, members of SafeRx, a local coalition dedicated to preventing overdoses, were present to discuss the importance of this day. The proclamation acknowledges the alarming statistic that 279 people fatally overdosed in Lake County in February 2022, emphasizing that all overdose deaths are preventable. It also addresses the stigma surrounding addiction, framing it as a chronic disease that requires compassion and support rather than judgment.

The proclamation outlines the critical resources needed to combat overdose, including access to naloxone (Narcan), syringe exchange programs, and medication-assisted treatment. In addition to the proclamation, SafeRx representatives announced an upcoming event to commemorate International Overdose Awareness Day. The event will take place on Saturday, August 19, at Austin Park from 10 AM to 2 PM, offering a platform for education and community engagement around overdose prevention.
