Fire Department welcomes therapy dog Doc for emergency services support

The Thomasville City Council meeting on December 17, 2024, featured significant updates, including the introduction of a new therapy dog and important funding discussions for local infrastructure projects.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the introduction of "Doc," a five-month-old golden retriever who will serve as a therapy dog at the fire department. Chief Waddell shared that Doc has been in training for two months and was recently introduced to the public, receiving a warm welcome, especially from children visiting City Hall. Doc's primary role will be to provide therapy for emergency services personnel, with plans for him to also engage in educational activities related to fire safety in schools and day camps.

In addition to the introduction of Doc, the council discussed the recent acquisition of a trailer for a new program aimed at lending tools to the community. City staff, including Chuck George and his team, were recognized for their efforts in this project.

The meeting also addressed the Range Road pump station bid, which came in higher than anticipated. City staff, including Morgan Huffman and Thomas Avant, successfully sought additional funding from the state, allowing the council to amend the agenda to include several important items. These included a resolution to accept a clean water state revolving loan offer, a budget amendment for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, and a capital project ordinance for the Range Road pump station upgrade.

The council unanimously approved the amended agenda, paving the way for these critical infrastructure improvements and community support initiatives. The meeting underscored the city's commitment to enhancing public services and community well-being.
