Traffic study reveals infrastructure needs for new development along Hoytsville Road

During a recent meeting of the Eastern Summit County Planning Commission, significant discussions centered around the impact of proposed residential and commercial developments along Hoytsville Road. The traffic implications of these developments were a primary focus, highlighting the need for infrastructure improvements to accommodate increasing vehicle volumes.

The traffic study presented indicated that as development progresses, specific enhancements will be necessary to ensure safety and efficiency on local roads. For instance, with the addition of 1,000 housing units and approximately 75,000 square feet of commercial space, the introduction of left and right turn pockets, as well as a traffic signal in Colville, will be required. As the number of units increases to 2,400, traffic engineers recommend a center-running left turn lane and a signal at the interchange west of Interstate 80.

Further projections suggest that at 3,800 units, an additional stop sign in Wandship and either a roundabout or a signal will be needed along Hoytsville Road. If the development reaches 5,000 units, a new interchange will be necessary to manage the expected traffic flow.

The traffic study, conducted by Health Engineers, has been shared with the county's traffic engineer, ensuring that both the planning commission and county officials are aligned on the necessary steps to address the anticipated growth. This proactive approach aims to mitigate potential traffic issues and enhance safety for residents and visitors alike.
