Mayor praises public works and announces community awards in Rising Sun

Rising Sun, MD, is celebrating significant progress in its community development and financial health, as highlighted during the Board of Commissioners meeting on December 14, 2021. Town Administrator Judy Melton commended the public works team for their dedication and problem-solving skills, emphasizing their positive impact on the town's operations.

Financially, Rising Sun is in a strong position, with 60% of real estate taxes and 53% of debt service collected this year. The general fund boasts a positive balance of $233,000, while the water fund is performing well, averaging $75,000 monthly with a total positive operation of $136,000. The sewer operations also show a healthy financial status, with a $45,000 surplus attributed to recent grants.

The meeting also addressed the need for new police officers, with Chief of Police encouraging community members to apply, highlighting competitive salaries and benefits.

Mayor Bill McCafferty expressed gratitude for the community's involvement in recent events, including the Northeast parade and Winter Extravaganza, which fostered a strong sense of community spirit. He also announced a meeting with the new principal of Rising Sun High School and shared the town's recent recognition as an outstanding rural community development by the Maryland Bridal Council. This award reflects the town's revitalization efforts, with property values increasing by 8.2% and new businesses emerging on Main Street.
