Rocklin School Board approves 2025-2026 calendar with earlier start date

The New Kent Schools Board convened on February 3, 2023, to address several key agenda items, beginning with the approval of the consent agenda. The board unanimously approved minutes from previous meetings and the superintendent's personnel recommendations, with a vote of 5-0.

Following the consent agenda, the board turned its attention to new business, specifically an update on the school calendar presented by Mr. Hockman. He highlighted the efforts of the calendar committee, which included diverse representation from students, parents, teachers, and administrators. The committee met twice in December and January to gather feedback and develop the proposed calendar.

Mr. Hockman explained that the new calendar would see students returning to school two weeks prior to Labor Day, starting on August 18 for the 2025-2026 school year. This change aims to provide families with more planning information for summer vacations. The proposed calendar includes nine teacher workdays before the school year begins, 100 instructional days, and a total of 200 teacher contract days.

Significant features of the calendar include a week off for Thanksgiving, two weeks for winter break, and one week for spring break, which will be split between March and early April. The last day of school is set for May 29, 2026. Mr. Hockman noted that the following school year, 2026-2027, would closely mirror the previous year’s calendar, with a slight adjustment to the start date.

The board clarified that the vote would focus on the 2025-2026 school calendar, with the option to approve the subsequent year as well. The meeting concluded with a clear path forward for the school calendar, reflecting the collaborative efforts of the committee and the board's commitment to enhancing the educational experience for students and families in New Kent.
