College career coordinator proposes CTE expansion plans to boost high school enrollment

A significant focus of the New Kent Schools School Board meeting on February 3rd was the expansion of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, aimed at enhancing student readiness for future careers. Peggy Spiek, the College Career and Life Readiness Coordinator, highlighted the importance of building a pipeline from middle school to high school to boost enrollment in CTE programs.

Spiek reported that the cadet program, which had 29 students in its inaugural year, remains steady in enrollment. She emphasized the need to engage eighth graders at the middle school level to increase future participation. "We are very optimistic about leveraging relationships with the middle school to enhance exposure and enrollment," she stated.

Another exciting development is the revival of the bridal program, led by a new teacher, Mr. Perry, who has reinvigorated interest in the course. Currently, 12 students are enrolled, with plans to introduce a Level 2 course next year to support their growth.

The meeting also addressed the nationwide teacher shortage, with Spiek noting that students who complete teacher preparation programs often choose to work in their home communities. The district is working on incentives to encourage these future educators to stay and teach in New Kent.

As the board looks ahead, they are preparing to review applications for dual enrollment classes, which could further enhance educational opportunities for students. The discussions underscored a commitment to expanding CTE offerings and fostering a supportive environment for both students and future educators in New Kent Schools.
