Middletown Township honors officers and firefighters for heroic life-saving efforts

In a powerful display of heroism, the Middletown Township Board of Supervisors honored several first responders for their life-saving actions during a dramatic vehicle crash on January 25, 2022. Officer Derek Leonhauser, Officer Michael Stum, Firefighter Colby Fisher, and others were recognized for their swift and decisive responses that ultimately saved a driver trapped in a burning vehicle.

Officer Leonhauser was the first to arrive at the scene of the head-on collision on Brownsville Road, where a car had crashed into a dump truck, igniting a fire. Within 30 seconds, he suppressed the flames with a fire extinguisher, preventing the fire from engulfing the vehicle and allowing time for rescue efforts. His quick actions were pivotal in saving the driver's life, despite the serious injuries sustained.

Officer Stum, who arrived shortly after, assisted in freeing the driver from the wreckage. He worked alongside firefighters, using extraction tools to remove the trapped occupant, further demonstrating the critical teamwork among emergency responders.

Firefighter Colby Fisher also played a vital role, using specialized equipment to open the car door and help free the driver’s legs, ensuring a safe extraction. The commendations highlighted the collaborative efforts of police and fire personnel, showcasing the effectiveness of their rapid response.

The Board emphasized the importance of teamwork and quick action in emergency situations, noting that the combined efforts of all responders were instrumental in saving a life.
