North Summit Fire Department reports successful hiring and improved coverage

Collaboration and progress were the key themes at the recent Summit County Council of Governments meeting, held on March 21, 2023. Leaders expressed a strong sense of teamwork, with one member emphasizing the importance of reaching out for coordination among cities to enhance community efforts.

A significant update came from the North Summit Fire Department, where Chief reported a busy month and positive developments. The department is currently operating under a tight budget but remains well below spending limits. Notably, the hiring of new firefighters has been pushed back to March, with three additional firefighters expected to join the team in April. This expansion will enable the department to open a second station in Wanship, enhancing emergency response coverage in the area.

Chief highlighted that this is the best coverage the district has ever seen, providing reassurance to citizens about improved fire and EMS services. The department faced some supply chain challenges regarding turnout gear, but these issues have been accounted for in the budget.

The meeting also introduced four new captains, each bringing valuable experience to the team. Captain Tyler Rausser, who has served on the Colville City Council, and Captain Andy Lutz, with two decades of experience from Weber Fire District, are among those stepping into leadership roles. Their combined expertise, along with that of Captains Dallas Davies and Nicholas Jarvis, totals an impressive 67 years of service, positioning the fire department for future success.
