Fire Chief announces hiring of three local firefighters and flood response initiatives

The Summit County Council of Governments meeting on March 21, 2023, highlighted significant developments in local emergency services and community support initiatives. Chief of the fire department reported the successful hiring of three full-time firefighters, including local residents Keith Hubbard and Nicholas Parker, enhancing the department's capacity to respond to emergencies.

The chief also detailed the department's proactive measures in flood response, including the outfitting of a flood trailer equipped with sump pumps and sandbags. This initiative has already proven beneficial, as firefighters assisted in saving animals during recent flooding incidents in the Henifer and Jonesville areas. The department is also preparing to establish a sand pile at Tollgate to facilitate quicker access to sandbags for residents in remote areas.

In addition to flood preparedness, the chief noted improvements in emergency response times, particularly with the staffing of emergency medical services (EMS) personnel on fire engines. This has allowed for timely interventions during medical emergencies, including a recent cardiac event where prompt action was taken.

The meeting also addressed administrative changes, with the fire department moving its offices to Hannaford to better serve the community. The chief expressed optimism about the department's growth and the positive impact on emergency response capabilities.

The council approved minutes from previous meetings and scheduled the next meeting for April 17, 2023. The discussions underscored the council's commitment to enhancing public safety and community support in Summit County.
