Dunkin Donuts seeks approval for drive-thru expansion at Old Lincoln Highway site

The Middletown Township Board of Supervisors convened on September 19, 2022, to discuss significant developments impacting local businesses and traffic management. A key focus of the meeting was the preliminary and final land development approval for a Dunkin' Donuts located at 627 Old Lincoln Highway, which aims to enhance customer service through the addition of a drive-thru.

The proposal, presented by David Chapowitz on behalf of the property owner, involves expanding the existing Dunkin' Donuts to include a three-lane drive-thru system. This system is designed to improve efficiency by allowing for kiosk ordering, mobile order pickups, and a bypass lane for customers. The project is a response to Dunkin' Donuts' corporate initiative to incentivize franchisees to incorporate drive-thrus, especially in light of challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The board discussed the potential traffic implications of the new drive-thru, particularly concerns about vehicle backups onto Old Lincoln Highway. Traffic consultants assured the board that the design includes sufficient queuing space for 10 to 12 cars, which should alleviate congestion. The addition of a deceleration lane is also planned to help manage incoming traffic and prevent backups on the main road.

In addition to traffic management, the project includes plans for stormwater management improvements, which are expected to benefit local residents by reducing runoff issues currently affecting the area. The applicant is also committed to maintaining existing parking spaces and providing sidewalks to enhance pedestrian access.

The board unanimously approved the proposal, emphasizing the importance of balancing business development with community needs. This decision marks a significant step toward improving local infrastructure and supporting the viability of businesses in Middletown Township. As the project moves forward, further approvals from external agencies, including PennDOT, will be necessary to finalize the development.
