Browns Canyon residents voice concerns over new construction yard proposal

The Eastern Summit County Planning Commission meeting on November 16, 2023, featured significant public concern regarding proposed developments along Browns Canyon Road. A resident, who has lived in the area for 30 years, voiced strong objections to the increasing number of conditional use permits being issued for agricultural land, which he fears is transforming the area into an industrial zone.

The resident highlighted that over a thousand acres are currently under conditional use permits, raising questions about the future of Browns Canyon. He expressed frustration over the planning commission's previous comments regarding the long-term service to the area, stating, "enough already" in response to the ongoing approvals for new developments. He emphasized his desire for the agricultural setting he moved to, rather than an industrial park.

Safety concerns were also a major theme in his testimony. The resident pointed out that Browns Canyon Road is already dangerous, citing six fatalities over his three decades of residence. He specifically criticized the proposed construction yard that would accommodate large dump trucks and excavation equipment, warning that the road's steep grade and narrowness would exacerbate safety risks.

The meeting underscored the tension between development and community safety, with residents calling for a reevaluation of the planning commission's approach to land use in the area.
