Proffitt City Council approves $750K grant application for fire truck purchase

The City of Crockett Council took significant steps towards enhancing public safety and community services during their recent meeting on July 18, 2022. The council approved a resolution to submit an application for a Texas Community Development Block Grant, which could secure up to $750,000 for a new fire truck. In addition to the grant application, the council also appointed the mayor to continue serving as the city’s representative on the Deep East Texas Council of Governments (DECOG). This appointment is vital for maintaining the city’s voice in regional discussions and decisions, as DECOG meets quarterly to address issues affecting the 12-county area.

The council further approved the appointment of two new members, Paula Hackett and Jessica James, to the Library Advisory Board, filling vacancies left by members whose terms had expired. This move ensures continued community engagement and oversight of library services.

Another key discussion involved a request from Mimsies Barbecue for the installation of pedestrian crossing signs and painted crosswalks at a new overflow parking area. The council recognized the importance of ensuring pedestrian safety in light of increased traffic in the area. They deliberated on whether the city or the business should cover the costs of the signs and markings, with estimates suggesting around $150 per sign. The council expressed a commitment to work collaboratively with Mimsies Barbecue to facilitate this safety enhancement.
