Summit County partners with Rocky Mountain Power for renewable energy program

In a recent meeting of the Summit County Council of Governments, the sustainability manager provided an insightful update on a significant initiative aimed at enhancing renewable energy access across the region. Under the soft glow of city hall lights, the manager outlined the collaborative efforts of five Summit County communities—Colville, Oakley, Francis, Park City, and Summit County itself—who are working together through an interlocal cooperative known as the Community Renewable Energy Agency.

This ambitious initiative, which includes 18 cities and counties in Utah, is focused on negotiating with Rocky Mountain Power to design a community renewable energy program. The goal is clear: to achieve net 100% renewable electricity for residents and businesses by 2030. The manager emphasized that while the program is still in the design phase, significant progress has been made over the past year and a half.

As the team prepares to submit their program application to the Utah Public Service Commission by March, they anticipate a review period of three to six months. If approved, each participating community will have a 90-day window to adopt an ordinance that formally implements the program. This step is crucial, as it will pave the way for residents to access renewable energy more easily through Rocky Mountain Power.

The sustainability manager expressed a commitment to supporting the councils of Colville and Oakley as they navigate these upcoming milestones. Meetings with local leaders, including Mayor Marsh and Council Member Joe Frazier, have been instrumental in ensuring that communication remains strong during this transitional phase.
