Summit County hires Safetec Solutions to assess emergency medical services system

Summit County is taking significant steps to enhance its emergency medical services (EMS) system, as discussed during the recent Summit County Council of Governments meeting on January 31, 2023. The council is currently working with Safetec Solutions, a consulting firm specializing in rural EMS systems, to assess and improve local emergency services.

The initiative began in 2019, driven by concerns from mayors regarding response times, staffing levels, and the overall effectiveness of the EMS system. A baseline report was created in early 2021, which analyzed various factors including budget, response times, and equipment. This report laid the groundwork for a more comprehensive master plan aimed at addressing the challenges faced by the EMS system.

Recognizing the need for expert guidance, the council opted to hire Safetec Solutions to conduct a thorough assessment. Since August, the firm has engaged in extensive data collection, including 73 interviews and three public meetings to gather community input. Their findings will inform recommendations on governance, operations, and financing for the EMS system, tailored to the county's projected growth and unique needs.

The next steps involve presenting preliminary recommendations to key stakeholders, including the county council, before finalizing the report in May. This will be followed by public meetings to discuss the findings and gather further community feedback. The council anticipates that the recommendations will spark important discussions on how to implement an effective and sustainable EMS model for Summit County.

As the council moves forward, the focus will be on ensuring high-quality, responsive emergency services that meet the needs of the community while also addressing financial sustainability. The outcome of this initiative is expected to have a lasting impact on public safety and health services in the region.
