Summit County initiates community visioning plan for sustainable development

Summit County's future is taking shape as the Council of Governments (COG) embarks on a comprehensive community visioning plan aimed at guiding development over the next 10 to 20 years. During a recent meeting on January 31, 2023, officials discussed the importance of gathering public input to create a cohesive roadmap for land use, sustainability, and housing.

Derek and Maddie, representatives from the planning department, outlined the visioning process, which is divided into four phases. Currently in Phase 1, the focus is on engaging the community to identify what residents love about Summit County and areas that need improvement. The final kickoff event for this phase is scheduled for February 7 at the South Summit Services Building, where residents are encouraged to share their thoughts and complete a survey.

The council emphasized the need for broad participation, noting that the success of the visioning plan hinges on the diversity of feedback received. "If we get 25,000 responses, we have a pretty good idea of what people are thinking," one council member stated, highlighting the importance of reaching out to all community segments, including those who typically do not attend public meetings.

In addition to the visioning plan, the meeting also introduced a Community Planning Lab, a 10-week course designed to educate residents about planning processes and encourage their involvement in local governance. This initiative aims to empower community members to contribute effectively to future planning efforts.

As the council moves forward, they are committed to ensuring that the voices of all Summit County residents are heard, shaping a future that reflects the community's collective vision. The next steps include gathering feedback from the upcoming event and continuing to engage with residents throughout the planning process.
